Dear Miss Ruston,

I have three suggestions to make for minor alterations in the Report :

(1) In Part II, page 5, para. 6, sentence beginning "The information at the disposal" and ending "quite beyond its powers", I suggest omitting the words "to a great extent" and inserting between "British" and "standards" the word "pass". The phrase would read "the University had succeeded in maintaining British pass standards".

The

reason unless the Vice-Chancellor feels

that this is claiming too much I would prefer not to qualify the statement that the University had reached certain standards; either one reaches them or does not.

(2) In Part II, page 11, para. (c) Autonomy, No.19, omit in the first line "continue to be". The reason as we are suggesting changes to make the University formally as well as actually free from Government direction, I think it is clear if we leave the statement in its more emphatic form. The University must be an autonomous institution.
